On Dominican Independence Day, the ADCA (Association of Dominican Classical Artists) Symphonic Orchestra presents an evening of symphonic merengues, conducted by Diego Garcia. Supported by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, the concert showcases works by iconic merengue composers such as Julio Alberto Hernández, Bullumba Landestoy, Ñico Lora, and Ana Silfa Finke. Merengue, rooted in popular music, was popularized in the mid-20th century, becoming the Dominican Republic's national genre.
